About the sound

Headphones recommended

Strings, woodwinds and brass together · Direction and distance change with your seat.

Direct sound is combined with early reflections and reverberation. Their proportions change with the seat. This is a synthesis based on assumptions, not a recording of the actual hall.

Acoustic sources and model scope

Statistical model · Not measured

Ensemble listening estimates direct sound from five equally loud representative instruments plus early and late reflected energy. It does not trace individual wall reflections or measure sound on site. Playback uses the same energy model, but the samples' instrumentation and volume differ from the equal-strength scoring assumption. Changing a sample does not change the recommendation criteria.

Reverberation time used
1.35s Midpoint of the 1.2–1.5 s range in the stage technical data
Room volume used
62,000m³ Estimated from the 3D enclosure · Actual volume unconfirmed

We also check score variation under nine assumptions: reverberation time ±0.4 seconds and volume ±20%. Balcony obstruction, reflector placement, and instrument directivity are not included. Scores cannot rank sound quality across venues.

77pts
Clarity–reverberation balance 45%67
Instrument delivery balance 35%95
Sound energy adequacy 20%53

Lowest component: Sound energy adequacy, 53 pts. Weaker components influence the combined score; scenarios range from 31 to 90 pts.

Scores rise when all three criteria are met together. Weights indicate importance; weaker components have more influence on the combined score.

Ensemble estimate: 31–90 pts

These are nine calculations with different assumed reverberation times and room volumes. Actual quality is not guaranteed to fall within this range, and a few points do not establish which seat is better.

Clarity–reverberation ratio (C80)
4.7 dB
Sound strength (G)
-1.7 dB

These values come from a statistical model, not measurements. C80 is assessed against a chosen balance range rather than rewarding higher values; G is assessed for sufficient strength. View calculation criteria

Ensemble listening uses assumed direct sound, early reflections, and late reverberation. Direct-sound preference is distance-based; view scores use distance, overview, and alignment. Reflectors, balcony obstruction, and instrument directivity are not modeled, so rear-seat acoustics may also be overestimated. How to read the scores

Comparing seats at Seoul Arts Center Opera Theater

Compare stage views and strings, bass or full orchestra sound in A/B. Ensemble listening scores are acoustic model estimates, not on-site measurements. Rows and numbers follow the official seating plan. Box seats carry numbers only; the 3D positions of the 2F–4F boxes and the OP seats are estimates.

What sources confirm — We read all 2,248 seat cells drawn on Seoul Arts Center’s official seating plan (spreadsheet) and official emergency evacuation plans (vector PDF), and assigned rows and numbers for 1F blocks A, B, C, OP, BOX1–2 and the 2F–4F A, B, C blocks and boxes. With 22 wheelchair spaces this matches the official 2,270. From the auditorium long section in the official stage drawing (DWG) we read the position and floor level of all 25 steps on 1F and every balcony step on 2F–4F, giving measured row spacing (0.95 m on 1F, 0.85–0.91 m in the balconies) and rises; the 1F plan is scaled to that row spacing (0.52 m seat spacing, and a 17.6 m pit width that matches the drawing’s 17.73 m). Proscenium height 12 m, the stage edge and orchestra pit position, and the balcony parapet heights also come from the drawings.

What remains estimated — The 2F–4F plans draw each level as concentric arcs around one centre, so the centre rows are fitted to the section while the side A and C blocks keep the drawing’s angles; errors of around 1 m are possible toward the side ends. The 36 box seats on 2F–4F are placed by estimate because the drawing spreads each level’s boxes side by side, and the OP seats assume the pit lift is raised to the level of 1F row 1. Rows 7–8 on 2F use the floor level of the flat rear area in the section. Walls, ceilings and box structures are approximations, and the musicians are an example ensemble on stage, not the actual pit layout of opera or ballet performances.

Views are calculated using a 1.75 m figure, your chosen eye height and seat coordinates. Actual obstructions from people, railings or equipment and show-specific layouts may not be represented. Orchestral sound combines direction, distance and assumed early reflections and reverberation. It does not use responses measured in the actual hall. Scores indicate preference fit; actual obstructions, sound quality and price are not yet included.

Orchestral audio: original samples made from VSCO 2 CE recordings (Versilian Studios, CC0). Band and game sounds are synthesized. Crowd audio uses Sandermotions’ CC0 recordings, not recordings from this venue.
