About the sound

Headphones recommended

Strings, woodwinds and brass together · Direction and distance change with your seat.

Direct sound is combined with early reflections and reverberation. Their proportions change with the seat. This is a synthesis based on assumptions, not a recording of the actual hall.

Acoustic sources and model scope

Statistical model · Not measured

Ensemble listening estimates direct sound from five equally loud representative instruments plus early and late reflected energy. It does not trace individual wall reflections or measure sound on site. Playback uses the same energy model, but the samples' instrumentation and volume differ from the equal-strength scoring assumption. Changing a sample does not change the recommendation criteria.

Reverberation time used
2.0s Shared assumption without venue measurements
Room volume used
16,133m³ Assumed from the 3D shell (bounded to 8–13 m³ per seat) · actual volume unconfirmed

We also check score variation under nine assumptions: reverberation time ±0.4 seconds and volume ±20%. Balcony obstruction, reflector placement, and instrument directivity are not included. Scores cannot rank sound quality across venues.

84pts
Clarity–reverberation balance 40%99
Instrument delivery balance 25%96
Sound energy adequacy 35%100

Lowest component: Instrument delivery balance, 96 pts. Weaker components influence the combined score; scenarios range from 80 to 99 pts.

Scores rise when all three criteria are met together. Weights indicate importance; weaker components have more influence on the combined score.

Ensemble estimate: 80–99 pts

These are nine calculations with different assumed reverberation times and room volumes. Actual quality is not guaranteed to fall within this range, and a few points do not establish which seat is better.

Sound strength (G)
4.8 dB

These values come from a statistical model, not measurements. C80 is assessed against a chosen balance range rather than rewarding higher values; G is assessed for sufficient strength. View calculation criteria

Ensemble listening uses assumed direct sound, early reflections, and late reverberation. Direct-sound preference is distance-based; view scores use distance, overview, and alignment. Reflectors, balcony obstruction, and instrument directivity are not modeled, so rear-seat acoustics may also be overestimated. How to read the scores

Comparing seats at Charlotte Theater

Compare stage views and strings, bass or full orchestra sound in A/B. Ensemble listening scores are acoustic model estimates, not on-site measurements. Sections, rows and seat numbers follow the official seating plan. Seat positions are a model built from the schematic plan, and heights are estimates back-solved from the operator’s seat-view photos. The 13 wheelchair spaces are not included.

What sources confirm — We read all 1,252 seat cells on the operator’s official seating plan (May 2026 edition) and assigned each a level, section, row and number. Seat counts and numbers per level, section and row all match the plan, and they also match the seat names of the operator’s 39 seat-view photos. Depths are fitted to the operator’s facility statement “23 m from the stage to the last row of 1F and 28 m to the last row of 2F”. Because no section drawing is published, the floor height of each level is an estimate back-solved from the gap between the front and back edges of the stage floor covering visible in 37 of the operator’s seat-view photos (1F from the OP row at 0 to row 21 at 2.6 m, 2F 6.1 → 11.6 m, stage floor +1.54 m).

What remains estimated — The operator publishes no plan or section drawing, so seat positions are a model that converts the schematic seating plan to metres. The 0.52 m seat pitch, the 25° tilt of the side sections and the aisle widths are modeled values that follow the plan’s proportions, and the 2F row pitch (about 1.0 m) is an estimate measured from the curtain width in the seat-view photos. Floor heights are estimates (modeled values). Relative heights between rows fit well (1F rms 0.09 m, 2F 0.27 m), but absolute heights are inversely proportional to the assumed 1.9 m depth of the stage floor covering (0.9–2.9 m across photos; the left and right sections differ systematically and are averaged out), so heights above the stage may be off by −17 to +27%. That range was narrowed by comparison with official sections of other theaters and by the 2F balcony soffit visible in photos from the rear rows of 1F. The 1.15 m seated eye height is also a modeled value, and the OP row, rows 1–2 and row 21 of 1F are extrapolated because no photos were taken there. The 13 wheelchair spaces are not included. Stage width, the proscenium (about 16 × 10 m), walls, ceiling and 2F railing dimensions are modeled.

Views are calculated using a 1.75 m figure, your chosen eye height and seat coordinates. Actual obstructions from people, railings or equipment and show-specific layouts may not be represented. Orchestral sound combines direction, distance and assumed early reflections and reverberation. It does not use responses measured in the actual hall. Scores indicate preference fit; actual obstructions, sound quality and price are not yet included.

Orchestral audio: original samples made from VSCO 2 CE recordings (Versilian Studios, CC0). Band and game sounds are synthesized. Crowd audio uses Sandermotions’ CC0 recordings, not recordings from this venue.
